Gumbert, the brother of the archbishop of Reims, France, (Saint) Nivard, was married to a woman named (Saint) Bertha. As he and his wife were childless, Gumbert decided to donate all his property to the Church and to found with his donations two monasteries. The couple mutually agreed to separate so that Bertha could enter a convent at Avesnes, while Gumbert journeyed to Ireland to become a monk. When a band of pirates stormed the grounds of Gumbert's monastery, Gumbert came out to beg them to respect the monks' property. They responded by slaying him. His body was returned to France and buried in Avesnes.
