Description & properties

This pocket-sized icon was lithographed by Holy Land artisans on olive tree wood, embellished with gold leaf and blessed upon the Stone of Anointing at Jerusalem’s Temple of the Holy Sepulcher.

By tradition the Jerusalem Icon of the Mother of God was painted by the holy Evangelist St. Luke fifteen years after the Ascension of the Lord and within the lifetime of the Holy Mother. He painted a total of about seventy Mother of God icons, but this one came first. For a long period of time the icon remained in Jerusalem in a local Christian community. Later it was translated to Constantinople, and subsequently it was brought to Novgorod and then to the Moscow Kremlin, where it became famous for performing miracles. In 1812 it was taken as a spoil by the French, and today it is kept at Notre Dame de Paris.

People pray before the Jerusalem Icon of the Mother of God in times of worry, sorrow and sadness; asking for family protection, conceiving a child, healing souls’ ailments or when away on a trip. When praying to the Most Holy Mother of God, people most commonly read the akathistos hymn, dedicated to the Jerusalem Icon of the Mother of God.
