Statement by Archbishop Georgiou of Cyprus

I would like to express my sincere regret at what has become known about the rumors of fraud, wrongdoing and all kinds of immorality within the Church of Cyprus.


I assure the named officers of the Church of Christ that my decision is to investigate fully and in all dimensions what outrages us all. The Holy Synod has entrusted the full investigation of the matter to its judicial authorities, who have already begun their investigation. I call on the police, as well as all agencies of the Republic of Cyprus involved in the investigation, to investigate the case to the end. This kind of phenomena cannot be accepted in any way and by anyone.


I am sure that you all will be able to distinguish between the institution of the Church and people unworthy of their mission. There are many clergy in the Church who honor their mission. I am sure that the Church will emerge stronger from today's crisis.



I wish that God blesses our entry into Lent, so that we may live to Holy Week whole and be able to appropriate the Grace that flows from the Immaculate Passion and the Three-Day Resurrection of Christ.
