On the last weekend of January 2024, i.e. January 27-28, the 27th International Festival of East Slavic Carols was held in the sports hall of the Municipal Center of Culture, Sports and Recreation in Terespol.
The 27th International Festival of East Slavic Carols was held at the Municipal Center of Culture, Sports and Recreation in Terespol.
For many years the festival has been one of the largest and most prestigious cultural and religious events in Central and Eastern Europe. Its greatest achievement is to restore the memory and cultivate the East Slavonic tradition of carol singing, reminding us that this region of the country, like no other, was permeated with a multi-confessional, multi-ethnic atmosphere.
The International Festival of East Slavic Carols has no competitive formula. Groups are treated equally and participate in two-day festival auditions.
The audience, which took a great part in this event, had a unique opportunity to hear ancient carols and pastorals of the Eastern tradition, which once dominated Podlasie and Polesie. Fifteen choirs and groups from Poland and Ukraine performed this year. The participants presented various styles: from traditional church and choral singing, folklore performances to white voice.
In connection with the two-year war in Ukraine, the organizers of the festival decided, as in the previous year, to attract representatives of the Russia and Belarus.
At the feast, in addition to a large audience, were present: the ordinariate of the Diocese of Lublin-Chelm, Archbishop Abel, the parish priest of the Orthodox parish. St. Apostle John the Theologian in Terespol, Fr. Fr. Jarosław Los, Mayor of Terespol Jacek Danyliuk, Council member of the Lublin Voivodeship Assembly Barbara Barszczewska, Chairman of the Biała Podlaska Poviat Council Mariusz Kicinski, Chairman of the City Council Jarosław Tarasiuk, Vice Chairman of the City Council Ewa Zając, mayors of the surrounding communes: Krzysztof Iwaniak (Terespol), Jerzy Trocz (Kodien) and Zygmunt Litwiniuk (Tuchna), as well as representatives of institutions and public organizations in and around Terespol.
