On January 23, 2024, with the blessing of Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk, Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, a round table "Traditions of Orthodoxy in China: losses and gains of the past, the image of the future" will be held in Moscow. The event will be held within the framework of the direction "Tradition. Dialogue. External Relations" of the XXXII International Christmas Educational Readings.
The session will be moderated by Hieromonk Kirill (Peregudin), an employee of the Secretariat of the Russian Orthodox Church for Foreign Affairs. The curator will be missionary of the Chinese Patriarchal Palace in Moscow S.Y. Yusupova. The event will be attended by clergymen, scientists and university professors.
During the meeting it is expected to touch upon such topics as translations of the Holy Scriptures into Chinese and their reception, psychological difficulties in the process of translating texts of Orthodox content into Chinese and attempts to overcome them, Russian-Chinese dictionaries of theological vocabulary. The Chinese experience of architectural localization of religious buildings, the distorted perceptions of Orthodoxy found in Chinese society, the peculiarities of the Chinese mentality manifested in the formation of the Orthodox community, the experience and prospects of online mission in Chinese will be considered. Turning to the history of the Beijing Theological Mission, The speakers will talk about her translation heritage in various collections in Russia and China, and how the study of Chinese in the mission formed the basis for translations of theological texts.
