Today, February 15, 2024, the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, presided over by the Pope's ATM and Patriarch Theodore II, met at the Catholic Church of the Holy Patriarchal Monastery of St. George in Old Cairo.


The Blessed One announced the beginning of the work by addressing the Synodal High Priests, emphasizing, among other things, the symbolism of convening the work of the Holy Synod at the conclusion of the twentieth anniversary of His Theophilic Patriarchate this year, in the very sacred space where rest many of his Venerable Predecessors who fought to defend the unity and rights of the ambassadorial Patriarchal See of Alexandria.


Rev. Metropolitan Mr. Gabriel, Metropolitan of Geron of Leontopolis, the Patriarchal Commissioner General, spoke against the ATM on behalf of the Venerable Predecessors and theophilist hierarchs.


This was followed by the awarding of the Rev. Metropolitan of Pilusia Mr. Narkissus, Patriarchal Commissioner of Alexandria by the Blessed One with the honorary distinction of the Superior Brigade of St. Mark, upon completion of ten years of high priesthood.


Subsequently, ATM accepted the resignation of Rev. Metropolitan Innocentiou of Burundi left active service for health reasons, with the honor of being named Metropolitan of Sozusa, while not accepting the resignation of Rev. Metropolitan of Kyrenia Mr. Athanasius.

Then His Beatitude the Patriarch informed the Holy Synod in detail about the work done by his Primate in all spheres of his ministry since last November.

It was then decided for pastoral reasons:


- The restoration of the Holy Metropolis of Caesarea,


- Renaming the Holy Metropolis of Tripoli (North Africa) to the Holy Metropolis of Libya,



- Renaming the ecclesiastical province of Botswana to the Holy Diocese of Gaborone and Botswana.


- The division of the Holy Metropolis of Burundi and Rwanda into two dioceses a) Bujumburu and Burundi and b) Kigali and Rwanda. The role of Patriarchal Commissioner I. Kigali diocese is assumed by Archim Panosiol. Mr. Nektarios Doumas.


-Permanent incorporation of the Holy Diocese of Mozambique into the Holy Diocese of Zambia,


- Establishment of the Holy Diocese of Juba and South Sudan,



- Establishment of the Holy Diocese of Benin and Togo.


The Holy Synod proceeded with the election of High Priests. Following proposals from the ATM, the Holy Synod elected the following incumbent Metropolitans:


-Cesarius, Mr. Theophylact of Tripoli, who received the title of Elder Metropolitan.


-Diospoleios, Mr. Emmanuel of Ptolemais.


- Ptolemaides, Mr. Panteleimon of

Navkratis, who remains as Chief Secretary of the Holy and Sacred Synod.


- Brazzaville and Gabon, Mr. Theodoros of Babylon.


- Accra, Mr. Daniel of Axomis.


- Aksomis, Mr. Petros of Accra.


- Libya, Mr. Gennadio of Botswana, who remains the representative of the Paleat Patriarchate to the Holy See.



-Nigeria, Mr. Nikodimos of Niloupolis.


The following provincial bishops were also elected:


- Mr. Panosiol hails from Bujumbura and Burundi. The presiding Master is Isaac Tsapoglu.


- Gomas (in the Democratic Republic of Congo) Panosiol. Archbishop Timothy Duba.
