CONVENING OF THE INTERNATIONAL JOINT COMMISSION FOR DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE ORTHODOX CHURCH AND THE LUTHERAN FEDERATION IN EGYPT

With the blessing of the Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, Mr. Theodore II, the Second See of the Patriarchate of All Africa is hosting a meeting of the International Committee for Theological Dialogue between the Orthodox Church and the Lutheran World Federation. Fourteen Orthodox and 10 Lutheran representatives, clergy and lay theologians are participating in this important meeting, which will run from May 24 to 31 this year.

The event takes on a special significance because it coincides with the paternal wishes and the Patriarchal blessing of the ATM of the Pope and Patriarch Theodore II in the historic Patriarchal Chair of the Church of Alexandria, in the land of Nile, the cradle of Christianity and creator of theology. For the high pioneers and pillars of the right faith, the Great Fathers and Holy Archbishops of Alexandria, through the famous Catechetical School of M. Polis, as well as through the vast deserts that gave birth to hermitage, asceticism and the finally formed monasticism. under heaven and according to the rules.

It is noted that the official bilateral Dialogue between Orthodox and Lutherans began some 40 years ago at the initiative and invitation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to the Lutheran World Federation, with the first joint meeting in 1981 in Espoo, Finland (August 27-September 4, 1981). Purpose The work of the Commission, as it stated in its first joint communiqué, is: "a dialog with the ultimate goal of a holistic society..... A fact that exceeds human expectations when one examines the experience of previous centuries". This was followed by more than 17 meetings in various cities in Europe and the Mediterranean, where, among other things, ecclesiology, the Eucharist and the Sacraments were studied and discussed.


Since 2019, the Commission has been working on the theme of pneumatology, "The Holy Spirit, the Church and the World," which, after the 2023 plenary session in the Reformation city of Wittenberg, Germany, will be finalized at the Cairo meeting. The declarations-texts published at these meetings formed the basis and point of departure for the ongoing global encounter and dialog between the two Christian families. The work of the Holy Spirit at creation, his presence and activity within and outside the Church, his emanation and his place in worship, the Invocation and liturgical prayer are aspects of the forthcoming joint Declaration, especially in connection with the anniversary of the completion of the 1700 years since the First Ecumenical Council of Nicea (325 ). Having concluded the topic of the Holy Spirit, the Committee will turn to the issue of Synodality.


The official opening ceremony of the work of the international Joint Theological Commission will take place on May 25 of this year of the year in the Catholic Church of the Theobaldist Patriarchal Monastery of St. George in Old Cairo.
