On November 15, 2024, a regular plenary session of the Synodal Commission on Bioethics was held in the Russian Orthodox University of St. John the Theologian in a face-to-face remote format. The event was chaired by the Chairman of the Synodal Commission on Bioethics, Rector of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy Bishop Silouan of Peterhof.

At the beginning of the meeting, the chairman of the commission listed the topics on the agenda for discussion.

In response to appeals from a number of dioceses, public organizations and individuals, the synodal commission previously formed a working group under the leadership of Archpriest Sergius Filimonov to discuss the issue of the order of Holy Communion for Orthodox Christians suffering from gluten-associated diseases. The interim results of the work of the group were discussed at previous meetings of the commission. During the current meeting, the members of the commission adopted «Recommendations of the Synodal Commission on Bioethics on issues related to the Communion of the Blessed Sacrament by persons suffering from celiac disease, pseudo-celiac disease and gluten wheat allergy». Text The document was the result of interaction between medical professionals, clergy and theologians in an attempt to comprehend the existing bioethical and pastoral problem.
