The Romanian Church canonized 16 martyrs, confessors and ascetics of the XX century

At a meeting on July 11-12, 2024, the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church decided to canonize more than ten martyrs, confessors and ascetics of piety of the 20th century as saints.

Since 2021, the Romanian Church has been preparing for the glorification of some great elders and theologians who suffered for the faith under the communist regime, whose names have been gradually announced over the past few years. The official celebrations for their canonization will take place in 2025, when the 140th anniversary of the recognition of the autocephaly of the Romanian Church and the centenary of the establishment of the Romanian Patriarchate will be celebrated.

The Basilica news agency lists the names of the 16 new saints:

  • Archimandrite Sofiane (Bogiu), Abbot of the Monastery of St. Anfim in Bucharest; canonized as Monk Confessor; Comm. 16 September;

  • Archpriest Dumitru Staniloae, Professor of Theology at the Universities of Sibiu and Bucharest; canonized as Priest Confessor; Comm: October 4;

  • Priest Constantin Sîrbu; in the rank of martyr; Comm: October 23;

  • Hieromonk Arseny (Boka) of Prislop Monastery; in the rank of Monk Confessor; Comm: November 28;
