August 15, 2024 in the Orthodox Church of the village of. The Throne Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was celebrated in Szczebrzeszyn. The Christmas Holy Liturgy was led by His Excellency Archbishop Abel of Lublin and Chełmsk.
The Holy Liturgy was preceded by a reception for Archbishop Abel. The hierarch was welcomed by: the Mayor of Szczebrzeszyn Rafal Kowalik, the Secretary of the City and Municipality of Szczebrzeszyn Edyta Dubel and the priest. Corneliusz Wilkel, custodian of the temple.
Choirs sang: Orthodox Parish. The Resurrection of the Lord in Siemiatycz under the direction of Violetta Borodina and the choir of the sisters of the monastery of St. Intercession of Our Lady in Turkovice under the direction of Sister Euphalia.
After the Gospel reading a festive speech was made by Fr. David Bruczyk. The priest emphasized the importance of the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos and the role of the Mother of God in the life of every Christian. The preacher also drew attention to the celebration this year of the 100th anniversary of the autocephaly of the Orthodox Church in Poland and the 35th anniversary of the restoration of the Lublin-Chelm diocese.
The ceremony culminated with a festive prayer service and the consecration of herbs and flowers. In his closing remarks, Archbishop Abel thanked the clergy and current representatives of local government for their presence, joint prayer and fruitful cooperation.
During the celebration there was was presented with the Order of St. Mary Magdalene, 2nd class, by the former Mayor of Szczebrzeszyn, Henryk Matej. Presenting the commemorative icons, His Excellency conveyed his best wishes to the new Mayor Rafal Kowalik and thanked Przemyslaw Cieszkowski, Head of the Real Estate Management Department of Szczebrzeszyn Municipality, for his cooperation.
At that time, the manager of the church, Fr. Corneliusz Wilkel thanked the hierarch for the leadership of the St. Liturgy. The director of the Municipal Cultural Center in Szczebrzeszyn expressed his gratitude to the MDK staff for the daily care of the historic church in Szczebrzeszyn and for accompanying tourists. Words of gratitude were addressed to all faithful and current supporters of the Orthodox Church in Szczebrzeszyn.
