On December 31, 2023, the last day of the year (old style) / January 13, 2024, the Patriarchate celebrated the feast of the Venerable Melania of Rome at the site of her asceticism in the complex of buildings of the Great Panagia nunnery, adjacent to the Holy Grove Brotherhood and with about 20 nuns.
On this day, the Church, especially the Jerusalem Church, remembers that St. Melania was a noble, rich and glorious woman, descended from a noble family of Roman Hypatians. After the death of her husband and two children, she traveled to Egypt to visit the monks on Mount Nitria. She distributed her wealth to the needy and to the confessors persecuted by the Arians, of whom she fed 5,000 people in three days. When they were exiled to Palestine, she also came to Jerusalem, built a monastery with her funds, and died there around 410.
In honor of Saint Melania, Vespers was celebrated in the evening, and in the morning the Divine Liturgy was celebrated by the priest of the monastery, Archimandrite Macarius, Archimandrite Christodoul and Hierodeacon Dositheus. Hierodeacon Simeon and monk Joseph sang, and the nuns of this and other monasteries prayed.
The priest and the parishioners were received by the Abbess Nun Melania, who diligently restored the icons of the holy temple of the monastery of the great Panagia.
