Shortly before the feast of Christmas last year, the Publishing House of the Orthodox Metropolis of Warsaw presented to its readers another album in a series on multiculturalism and the multicoloredness of the Orthodox Church in the world under the general title "The Colors of Orthodoxy." . It was dedicated to mainland Greece. A continuation or addition is an album released this summer that focuses on the island of Greece. This is the thirteenth "Colors of Orthodoxy" album.
The latest album, by way of exception, does not have the usual "Preface" or "Introduction", as they were related to the whole of Greece and were included in the previous aforementioned album dedicated to mainland Greece. This time the reader will be able to plunge at once into the multicolored, unique Greek Orthodox atmosphere of the islands scattered over the several seas surrounding Greece. There are more than three thousand islands in Greece. Due to its limited volume of (192 pages) the album was able to show the charm of only a few dozen of them, including the most famous among tourists and pilgrims.
The editors wanted to divide the photos in the album into four groups based on geography. Each chapter is preceded by a map with marked locations where the photographs in the album were taken. The locations presented first are, located on islands in the Ionian Sea: Corfu, Gaios, Lefkada, Ithaca, Kefalonia and Zakynthos. The second part covers the islands located in the northern and central part of the Aegean Sea, starting from Thassos in the north, through Lemnos, the Sporades archipelago, Euboea and Aegina near Athens, ending with Lesbos, Chios and the northern part of the Cyclades. archipelago. The third part presents the islands of the southern Cyclades, starting from Mykonos and Syros, through Naxos and Paros, to Santorini in the south, and further east: an archipelago of twelve islands of the Dodekenes, including Patmos, Kos, Halki, Rhodes, and Karpathos. The last part included the largest Greek island of Crete with a huge number of charming places associated with Orthodoxy.
The album contains a total of 154 photos showing various places, architecture, religious services, spirituality and people. These photos were contributed by several dozen authors from several countries, making the edition, like previous albums, international. The vast majority of the photos submitted are from an international photo contest, the main organizer of which was the Ortnet Association, which owns the website www. orthphoto.net. The Apostolic Diakonia of the Greek Orthodox Church also played an important role in the creation of the album.
Presented album will be a great gift not only for Christmas, but also for any other occasion, such as a birthday or a name day. Its recipients (gifted recipients) can be not only people who know Polish. At the same time, all the texts in the album were also presented in Greek, English and Russian. This will also allow you to gift it to your friends who do not speak Polish.
In his "Introduction" to the previous album, Metropolitan Sava of Warsaw and All Poland, expressed his hope that "The presented album should contribute not only to the interest of the faithful of the Orthodox Church in Poland, or of the inhabitants of our country in a broader sense, in visiting Greece, but also to the familiarization of Polish citizens with the Orthodox heritage of this unique country. It is important that Polish tourists vacationing in Greece realize how important a place Orthodoxy occupies in the life of Greeks and how they value and are proud of their faith. "Greece is extremely close to Poland, especially to Orthodox believers," writes Archbishop Jerzy in his historical essay. - Its friendly attitude, beautiful nature and tourist values, and above all the spiritual shrines and monasteries mean that many aspects of monastic and ecclesiastical life have forever enriched our tradition.
