On April 18, 2024 Patriarchal Exarch of Western Europe Metropolitan Nestor of Korsun and Western Europe visited the mass grave of Russian soldiers - participants of the First World War in the municipal cemetery of Montmorency (Paris region, France) where he consecrated a renovated chapel built in memory of Russian soldiers who died in the performance of allied duty on the battlefields of France, reports Patriarchy.ru.

The consecration of the chapel was attended by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation A.Yu. Meshkov, employees of the Russian diplomatic mission, clerics of the Korsun diocese and members of the society "Russian Memory".


The chapel was restored this year by the forces of the Embassy of the Russian Federation. According to A.Yu. Meshkov, 374 people are buried in the plot, which makes this burial site one of the largest Russian necropolis in the West.


Montmorency was also home to the Russian Old Age Home, mainly for military personnel; the town itself was also home to Russian emigrants who moved in after the 1917 revolution, many of whom later found their final resting place in the Montmorency cemetery.
