Today, March 11, our Holy Church honors the memory of St. Sophronius, Patriarch of Jerusalem, St. Theodora Basilisa and St. George of Sinai.
St. Sophronius was born in Damascus of Syria about 575 A.D.. of pious and humble parents who strongly instilled in him a Christian worldview. He received a great philosophical and theological education. He traveled to Jerusalem, where he became a monk in the monastery of St. Theodosius and devoted himself to deeper theological and ecclesiological studies.
He was an opponent of the heresy of Monothelitism, which he fought against by writing many anti-heretical works. For his great offering in 634 AD. Sophronius was elected Patriarch of Jerusalem, succeeding the great Patriarch Modestus.
From his position as Primate of the Zionist Church, he intensified the fight against the irreverent Monothelitists. He surrendered his soul to the Lord around 638 AD.
He wrote famous theological texts and talks. Among them is "Praise of St. John the Merciful Patriarch of Alexandria and Blessed Mary of Egypt of Cyprus."
