Our Church today honors the memory of St. Luke in Sterio of Biotia in Greece.
St. Luke was born in 896 AD. in Phocida. After finishing school, he took up animal husbandry and at the same time mentally and intensely trained his body and soul. When his parents died, he gave away all his possessions to the poor and after many wanderings settled permanently on Mount Stirion. There, together with other monks, he built a monastery to which, because of his spirituality and great reputation, many people flocked. He reposed in 953 AD, and his holy relic has been preserved in its original form.
Today, the monastery remains another beacon of Orthodoxy and a living island of modern monasticism, as well as an expression of world cultural heritage. And the monastery's magnificent catholicon is an important example of Byzantine splendor, both in its architecture and its magnificent mosaics. It is rightly called the "Holy Sophia of Rumeli".
