Commemoration of the Monk Simeon of Chudnogorny

Память преподобного Симеона Чудногорного
Christ is risen!

Today our holy Church honors the memory of St. Simeon of Divine Mountain.

Simeon lived during the reign of Justin II (574 AD ). He came from Edessa in Syria, but was born in the famous and tried Antioch.

A five-year-old child lost his father in a great earthquake in Antioch. He was carefully raised by his mother Martha, whose Church honors her on the 4th of July.

Later Simeon moved to a monastery in Seleucia, near the mountain village of Pilas. Close to an experienced ascetic, Simeon studied the Bible, practiced prayer and humility. He quickly became a role model for his younger brothers as well.

Later, after various trials, he retired to Miracle Mountain. There he lived a hard ascetic life for forty-five years. He slept peacefully and attained eternal bliss in 590 A.D., at the age of eighty-five.

To St. Simeon was attributed the gift of divination and healing of diseases. Thus, he announced the dream of his teacher, the dream of Archbishop Ephrem (545 A.D.), the earthquakes of Antioch and Constantinople (557 A.D.) and other events.
