Commemoration of the Martyrs Anastasia and Vasilisa

Today, April 15, the Church remembers the martyrs Anastasia and Vasilisa.

Saints Anastasia and Basilissa, whom we also celebrate today, were wealthy from Rome. They were an exception because they avoided the corruption and alienation that engulfed Rome's upper social classes and lived in chastity and virginity. At a young age they embraced the faith of Christ and, by giving away their possessions, became the backbone of the Christians of Rome.

After the martyrdom of the chief apostle Paul, two of the saints buried his remains. A little later they were arrested and, brazenly confessing that they were Christians, subjected to various tortures. In the end they were beheaded, having won the glorious crown of martyrdom and forever remaining one more vivid example of female goddesses in the church canon.

Tonight is the Great Supper. "The Father is my hope, the Son is my refuge, the Holy Spirit is my refuge, Holy Trinity, glory be to Thee."
