A virtual exhibition dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the Novodevichy Stavropigial Monastery was opened

The portal «Virtual Museum "Moscow"» has opened an exhibition «500 years of Moscow Novodevichy Monastery». The exposition presents documents about the Novodevichy Stavropigial Nunnery, dating from the 18th to 21st centuries, which are kept in the Archive Fund of Moscow.

For the anniversary of the monastery, the Moscow Glavarkhiv prepared a selection of documentary materials telling about the construction of the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the City Tower of the Novodevichy Monastery, the renovation work under the direction of architect M.F. Kazakov, the opening of the school. Kazakov, the opening of the school at the monastery, the service of priests and clergymen of the monastery, the restoration of wall paintings of the monastery in the early XX century, the closure of the monastery, the construction of the monument-bust to N.V. Gogol, the establishment of a memorial plaque to the architect-restorer P.D. Baranovsky on the building of the former Hospital Chambers.

The exposition demonstrates a unique document — a record in the metric book on the death of Anton Chekhov in the city of Baden and his funeral in the Smolensk Cathedral of the Novodevichy Monastery and burial in the cemetery of the monastery. This metric book is included in the State Register of Unique Documents of the Archive Fund of Moscow.

The exposition is supplemented by photo documents of the late 19th — 20th centuries with views of the monastery, as well as a 1928 drawing of the Novodevichy Monastery tower made by A.V. Vlasov, the chief architect of Moscow in 1950-1955.
