Anniversary of the death of His Eminence Metropolitan Vasily

On February 11, 2024, the anniversary of the death of Metropolitan Basil, His Eminence Sava, Metropolitan of Warsaw and All Poland, celebrated a funeral service over the grave of his late predecessor. His Eminence was accompanied by Archbishop Grzegorz of Bielsk.


To the repose of the departed soul. Metropolitan Basil was prayed to during the central Sunday afternoon St. Liturgy at the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. Mary Magdalene Warsaw.

Metropolitan Basil was born on March 15, 1914 in the town of Cisy, Bialystok region. In 1936 he graduated from the Vilnius Theological Seminary. In 1937 he married and was ordained a deacon, and a year later a priest. He worked in several parishes in the Bialystok region. In 1962 he graduated from the Moscow Theological Academy. In 1959 he took monastic tonsure. On March 25, 1960 he was ordained a bishop, becoming Bishop of Bielsk, Vicar of the Warsaw-Belk diocese. On May 5, 1961 he was ordinariate of the Diocese of Wrocław-Szczecin. On January 24, 1970, he was elected Metropolitan of Warsaw and All Poland. He died on February 11, 1998 after a long and serious illness.
