Commemoration Day of the Holy Martyr Markellus, Bishop of Apamea

День памяти священномученика Маркелла, епископа Апамейского
Today the Church celebrates the eve of the Dormition of the Theotokos and honors the memory of the prophet Micah, the martyr Markellus, Bishop of Apamea of Syria, and the new martyr Simeon of Trebizond (†1653).

Micah belonged to the tribe of Judah and was born in Morastia, so he was also called Morastian. He was almost a contemporary of the prophet Isaiah, he is one of the so-called minor prophets, because of the small text of the prophecy he wrote.

His prophecy consists of seven chapters. In the first three he predicts the destruction of Samaria. In the next two he speaks of the coming of the Messiah, and in the last two he governs the people of Israel, who, to redeem it, are asked to offer various sacrifices to God, while Micah reminds him of the present duty he owes to God, with the following question: what does God require of you but to be just, merciful, and willing to do according to the commandments of the Lord your God?" (Micah 6, 8).

The Holy Martyr Marcellus lived during the reign of Theodosius I the Great. He came from Cyprus, where he received a public office as he was entrusted with the administration of the island.

In carrying out his duties, he wanted to be just. Later he became a priest and then was appointed bishop of Apamea in Syria. As a shepherd he was honest and prudent. He shared He showed himself as a zealous zealot of the Orthodox faith. He showed himself as a zealous zealot of the Orthodox faith, erecting many churches as people refused to believe in idols.

The results of his sacrifice brought an end to martyrdom, and thus St. Marcellus surrendered his spirit to the Lord.

Today, on the eve of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the Church calls us to spiritual preparation to benefit from the holy event.

Let us pray to the Mother of Christ the Savior for all that saddens and confuses us in our daily struggles. For the liberation of the homeland and the support of our youth.
