On Sunday, June 30, 2024, the Electoral Council of the Orthodox Church in Bulgaria, meeting in Sofia, elected a new patriarch, the current Metropolitan Daniel of Vida. The hierarch will replace the late Patriarch Neophytos, who passed away on March 13 this year.
His Holiness Patriarch Daniel was born in 1972 in Smolani, in southern Bulgaria. In 1996 he began theological studies at Sofia University, which he completed by correspondence in 2002. In 1997 he was accepted into the novitiate of St. George Monastery in Hadjidimovo. In July 2004 he was sent to the Rozhensky Monastery, where he was ordained a priest. In 2006 he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite. In January 2008, he was ordained a bishop with the title of Bishop of Dragovit, Vicar of the Newrokop Metropolis. In 2011, he was appointed auxiliary bishop to the Metropolis of the United States, Canada and Australia. In 2018, he was elected ordinariate of the Metropolis of Vidin. On June 30, 2024, he was elected Patriarch of Bulgaria and Metropolitan of Sofia.
