On March 24 and 25, we celebrate the Autocephaly Day of the Georgian Orthodox Church

24 и 25 марта мы отмечаем День автокефалии Грузинской Православной Церкви
We are approaching dates of exceptional importance for our Church and country - the day of the restoration of autocephaly and the recognition of the historical autocephaly of the Georgian Orthodox Church by the Ecumenical Patriarchate. On March 25, 1917, thanks to God's intervention and the merits of outstanding clergy and laity, the autocephaly of the Georgian Apostolic Orthodox Church, which was lost more than a hundred years ago, was restored. This was and is a historical achievement of the greatest importance for our country and the Church, but the restored autocephaly of the Church had to be recognized by the local Churches as well. And so, in 1990, on the first Sunday of Great Lent, on the Feast of Orthodoxy (at that time this feast was to fall on March 4), through the great efforts of Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II, Archbishop of Constantinople, and Ecumenical Patriarch His Holiness Demetrios I handed over to the Georgian Orthodox Church our Act of Recognition and Affirmation of the historical autocephaly of the Church - the Tomos. On the same day (March 4, 1990) the Ecumenical Patriarch presented the Georgian Church with a second certificate confirming the patriarchal dignity. Thus, the Feast of Orthodoxy crowned a particularly important ecclesiastical work begun by the Patriarchs of Saskatchewan - Kyrion, Leonidas, Ambrosios and their associates, and the The Georgian Orthodox Church, founded by the Apostles, has received a well-deserved reward. international recognition of its ancient autocephaly.
