Excavations on Gremyachya Gora in Pskov brought the first finds

In Pskov, excavations began on the territory of Gremyachya Gora, where archaeological research had never been carried out before. Research began from the underground level of the historical temple of the holy unmercenaries Kozma and Damian of the XIV-XIX centuries. This architectural monument is part of the Gremyatsky Monastery ensemble, known from the chronicles.

Under the floor of an ancient house of prayer, researchers discovered a crypt, the existence of which was previously unknown. The room with plastered walls and an earthen floor is presumably the burial place of the Pskov Archbishop Macarius, who was the abbot of the Snetogorsk and Pskov-Pechersk monasteries during his lifetime. The archbishop tried to pacify the rebellion of the Pskovites, for which he was put on a chain by the townspeople. He spent the last year of his life in the Gremyatsky Monastery, where he later went to the Lord God and was buried.
At the modern entrance to the temple, archaeologists have found another crypt. There were buried two deacons, whose names are known thanks to the preserved ceramide, installed in 1647 by the son of one of the deceased, who served as a solicitor for the Gremyatsky monastery.
“With the blessing of Vladyka Tikhon, our the temple was included in the study. The customer is ANO Vozrozhdenie. At the moment, the first stage is taking place: the pits are being dug, 'Father Alexander Smirnov, the rector of the Church of Saints Cosma and Damian on Gremyachaya Mountain, told the Vesti Pskov correspondent. In the future, archaeologists will have to clarify the historical outlines of the building, reveal the foundations of the lost columns, assess the degree of preservation of the building's foundations - and, finally, draw up a project for the restoration of the temple.

The Gremyatsky Monastery, known since the XIV century, was erected on the settlement, on a high mountain above the Pskov River. The historical abode is surrounded by legends and has never been explored before. Since the 15th century, the monastery has been protected by the walls of the Okolny Castle. It was here that the Pskov River was locked from enemies with lower water-running grates. In addition to the Church of Saints Kosma and Damian, the architectural ensemble of Gremyachya Gora also includes the fortress walls built by the Italian architect Gremyachya Tower, a bakery and chambers in the Wolf Pits (the name of the latter indicates that earlier on this place were defensive structures in case of an enemy raid). The state of the surviving to this day Historical buildings are assessed by experts as extremely emergency. Residents of Pskov hope that the begun archaeological research will serve as a prologue to the subsequent restoration of the unique monument of history and culture.
