In Catholic tradition, Archangel Michael is also regarded as the protector of the Church and all the faithful. During times of trials and temptations, Christians turn to him for help. Many saints spoke of visions of Michael and his assistance in both spiritual and earthly battles. He is the patron of soldiers, police officers, and all those who stand for truth and justice.
The world-famous Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel is located on Monte Gargano in Italy. It is believed that Michael appeared there in the 5th century to protect the locals from attacks. To this day, pilgrims visit the site to honor this great heavenly warrior.
Archangel Gabriel – Messenger of God's Will
Gabriel’s name means "Strength of God," and his role in salvation history is significant. He is the angel who announces God's will to humanity. Archangel Gabriel is best known for the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, where he told her that she would become the Mother of the Savior. This moment became a turning point in human history, marking the beginning of God's incarnation in Jesus Christ.
Gabriel also appears in the Old Testament when he explains the future to the prophet Daniel. According to Church tradition, Gabriel also appeared to Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, to announce the birth of this great prophet.
Gabriel symbolizes God's grace and His constant presence in the life of every person. In prayers, the faithful ask him for enlightenment, wisdom, and readiness to accept God's will, even when it is beyond human understanding.
Archangel Raphael – Healer and Protector of Travelers
Raphael’s name means "God heals," and he is known primarily as an angel of healing. His primary role in Scripture is seen in the Book of Tobit, where Raphael helps the young Tobiah find a cure for his blind father and secure a wife who becomes his lifelong companion.
Raphael embodies God's care for our health—both physical and spiritual. He helps the faithful overcome illness, whether bodily or spiritual. The prayer to Archangel Raphael is especially relevant in times of illness and the need for comfort. Moreover, Raphael is the patron of travelers and all those who seek guidance on their life's journey.
The Archangels in Our Daily Lives
The Church teaches that angels are not distant beings removed from earthly concerns but active participants in the spiritual lives of every person. The Archangels, especially Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, assist believers in their spiritual quests, help them fight temptations, and guide them toward goodness.
This feast day is an important reminder that we are not alone in our struggle against sin and spiritual difficulties. We have powerful heavenly protectors ready to assist us if we only turn to them in prayer.
The Church encourages prayers to the Archangels for protection, enlightenment, and healing. A special prayer to Archangel Michael was composed by Pope Leo XIII in the late 19th century after a vision of the coming struggle between good and evil:
"Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke him, we humbly pray: and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen."
