The history of the holiday dates back to the II century - during the reign of the Roman emperor Hadrian, who cruelly persecuted Christians. A pious woman named Sophia (which in Greek means Wisdom) raised three daughters, whom she once named Pistis (Vera), Elpis (Hope) and Agape (Love), patiently teaching them good deeds and prayer.
When the eldest of the daughters, Vera, was twelve years old, and the youngest, Love, only ten, the pagans tried to force the young women to renounce the Lord Jesus Christ and turn to paganism. At first, the girls were appeased with gifts and flattering persuasions, and when this did not work, they were thrown into prison and subjected to savage torture. But the sisters were adamant. Then the torturers executed three children in front of their mother. And soon, incessantly praying at the grave of her murdered daughters, she departed to the Lord God and Sophia.
Over time, the Church moored Faith, Hope, Love and their mother Sophia with the number of saints in the face of martyrs. Many Christian churches in different countries have been consecrated in their honor. And the relics of the saints Faith, Hope, Love and their mother Sophia are in the church of St. Trofim in the French town of Esho - in 777 they were reverently transported there by the Strasbourg bishop Remigius. Every year, thousands of pilgrims from both Western and Eastern Christians come from this temple to venerate the relics of the saints and prayerfully honor the memory of three young women and their mother, who remained faithful to the Lord and the True Faith until the end of their earthly lives.
In Belarus, Moldova, Russia, Ukraine, many national signs are associated with the day of this holiday. One of them says that dry weather all day long on September 30 is towards late winter; rain on this day promises an early arrival of spring.
