The first Orthodox church to be built in Karakalpakstan
27 September 2018
The Republic of Karakalpakstan is located in the north-west of Uzbekistan. Soon in its capital, the city of Nukus, the first Orthodox church in the republic will be built. The city administration (khokimiyat) has already allocated an area of six-tenths of a hectare for construction - not much, but enough for the construction of a church.
According to EurAsia Daily, the future temple will be consecrated in the name of the Great Martyr Panteleimon the Healer. In general, negotiations and approvals took three years - and, finally, a plot of land was allocated for the construction. The future temple will be located in the area of the ring road, in the Nur mahalla (district). The site for the construction of the church was determined during the visit of the Metropolitan of Tashkent and Uzbekistan Vikenty to Karakalpakstan. The head of the Central Asian Metropolitan District and the khokim of Nukus Parakhat Tureshev held negotiations, the result of which was the determination of the site for the construction of the St. Panteleimon Church. So far, there is only one prayer house in the capital of Karakalpakstan - it also bears the name of the great martyr healer. This is the only prayer building of Orthodox Christians in the entire republic. However, thanks to the agreement reached by the authorities of Karakalpakstan and the Russian Orthodox Church, very soon the situation on this issue will change for the better.
