Today Orthodox believers remember the Martyr Tatiana of Rome. But the day of the memory of the virgin is also an informal secular holiday - on this day in 1755 Moscow University was founded. Therefore, Tatiana is revered as the patroness of students and teachers.
Tatiana was the daughter of a wealthy Roman, raised in the Christian faith. But even at a young age, she became indifferent to worldly goods and devoted herself to Christ, taking a vow of celibacy. It is known that she helped the needy, looked after the sick, and visited those imprisoned in dungeons. She spent a lot of time in prayer and other pious pursuits.
When the persecution of Christians began, Tatiana was thrown into prison and tortured, demanding to renounce the faith of Christ. But she steadfastly endured the torment, strengthening herself with prayer. The heavenly angels descended to her and protected her from the tormentors. Then she was thrown at the mercy of a lion for the amusement of the public. But instead, the lion began to meekly caress her. And after that they cut off the head of the martyr. The eight servants of the city governor, who tormented the saint, believed in Jesus Christ, seeing the power of God over her, and after the torment they, too, were beheaded with the sword.
