According to the information portal 'Orthodoxy and Peace', the Synod of the Orthodox Church of Constantinople, which is headed by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, made a decision on the admissibility of remarriage for representatives of the white clergy. It concerns widowed priests, as well as those priests who were abandoned by their wives - and each such case will be considered individually. It is reported that the rite of such a marriage will be short - just one prayer - and performed in a narrow family circle. Until now, a second marriage for representatives of the white clergy was not allowed by the canons of the Orthodox Church. If a wife left the priest or he became a widower, according to church canons, he was left with a choice between monasticism, celibacy, or abandonment of the priesthood. Thanks to the decision of the Synod of the Orthodox Church of Constantinople on this issue, the situation may change over time in other local churches.
