Church in the name of St. John the Merciful was consecrated in St. Petersburg

Храм во имя святителя Иоанна Милостивого освятили в Санкт-Петербурге
On Sunday, November 11, in the Krasnoselsky district of the northern capital, a church was consecrated in the name of St. John the Merciful. The rite of great consecration was performed by the ruling bishop, Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Ladoga Barsanuphius. The temple on the border of the South Primorsky Park, opposite house 24 on Vallesti Street, was under construction for four years, from 2012 to 2016 - all this time and two more years after the residents of the surrounding areas were looking forward to the joyous day of the consecration of the church. Olga Lindrot from the workshop of Gennady Fomichev became the architect of the building. The rector of the new church is Archpriest Valery Shvetsov. As clarified by 'Nevskie Novosti', the new church perpetuates the memory of those killed during the Blockade - that is why it was built where the front line of the city's defense was located during the Great Patriotic War. Saint John, whose name the new temple bears, lived in the 7th century and was the patriarch of Alexandria. All his life he was distinguished by special care for the poor, for which he received the nickname 'The Merciful'.
