After the death of his parents, he sold all the property he inherited, according to the words of the Savior, and distributed the proceeds to the poor. Saint Nicholas was ordained to the priesthood - and eventually became the archbishop of the city of Myra. Carrying the episcopal ministry, he became known far beyond the borders of Lycia as an assistant to the poor, a defender of the slandered and unjust condemned and irreconcilable enemy of paganism and heresies, which in the first centuries of the existence of Christianity were especially numerous.

Participating in the year 325 in the First Ecumenical Council, which approved the Symbol of Faith, Saint Nicholas slapped the heretic Arius, whose false doctrine denied the divinity of Jesus Christ and His eternal birth from God the Father (Arius argued that Christ is only the highest creation). Saint Spyridon of Trimifuntsky and other Fathers of the Church, who participated in the work of the Council, rejected and condemned the Arian heresy.

Saint and miracle worker Nicholas lived a long life and peacefully departed to the Lord God. Immediately after his death, his body began to exude holy myrrh. Even before the glorification of the Church, thousands rushed to the place of rest of the great saint believers, asking for his intercession in deliverance from diseases, troubles and difficult life circumstances. For a long time, the holy relics of Nicholas the Wonderworker stayed in Mira, and in the 11th century they were transferred to the city of Bari in Italy. Part of his relics remain there today.

The huge number of St. Nicholas and Nicholas churches in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova and other Orthodox countries testifies to the huge popular veneration of St. Nicholas and the miracle worker for centuries. Since olden times, many folk signs and customs have been associated with the winter holiday dedicated to this saint. On this day, deals were traditionally concluded and surplus grain was sold: merchants believed that 'Nikolsky bargaining is inviolable' Many people forgiven their debts at Nicholas Winter, believing that this deed, in keeping with the spirit of the Gospel, would bring them a lot more in the coming year. And, besides, they closely watched the weather: it was noticed that if it is clear on 'Nikolai Zimny', May will be warm and dry; a lot of frost on this December day promised a rich harvest of oats, and a heavy snowfall - good grass for mowing.
