St. Publius

Syrian abbot. The son of a Senator from Zeugma, Syria, he gave away all of his wealth and possessions to the poor and became a hermit. Joined by so many other hermits that they were organized into a community, Publius was elected abbot, creating a strict rule for the monks and requiring of them a stem life of austerity. The community was later divided into two groups, one of Greeks and another of Syrians.
