It was this lecture that inspired Magenulf to devote the rest of his life to God in the clerical state. He subsequently became archdeacon of Paderborn. Having inherited much land from his family, Magenulf resolved to donate a portion of this property to the foundation of a convent of nuns. He chose for the site of the new religious community a location in the woods of Bodeken, where one night he had observed deer congregating to drink from a spring. Subsequently he encountered in the same spot a mysterious stag that bore between its antlers a dazzling cross, convincing him that God had chosen the location.
