St. Amalberga

Amalberga
Feastday: July 10
Death: 805

Miracle worker and virgin, beloved of Charlemagne. Amalberga is revered in Belgium, where the tradition exists that Charlemagne came to carry her to his castle. When Amalberga refused his proposal of marriage, Charlemagne attempted to take her by force. He broke her arm in the struggle but was unable to remove her from the altar that served as her sanctuary. When Charlemagne withdrew his demands, Amalberga miraculously cured him from an illness. Amalberga was known for such miracles throughout the region. She died at the age of thirty-one.
