Martyrs of Alexandria

Groups of martyrs put to death in the city Alexandria, Egypt. The majority of these martyrs are not named individually but perished in groups.

(d.c. 257) A group of martyrs described by St. Dionysius of Alexandria as suffering hideous tortures and truly gruesome deaths at the hands of their Roman captors. Feastday: August 10 (d. 260) Martyrs, including priests, deacons, and lay persons, who sacrificed their lives caring for victims of a deadly plague. Feastday: February 28 (d. 342) Christians slain by Arians and pagans on Good Friday. St. Athanasius described this martyrdom in his writings. Feastday: March 21 (d. 356) Christians martyred by an Arian official While celebrating Mass. St. Athanasius was conducting the celebration but managed to escape death, one of the several times that he narrowly avoided murder at the hands of his many Arian enemies. Feastday: January 28 (d. 372) Martyrs who were slain or exiled when authorities attacked St. Athanasius. The martyrs of the church of Theonas, a suburb of Alexandria, were singled out for praise by Church historians. Feastday: May 13 (d. 390) Christians attacked by pagan worshippers of the god Serapis. When the Christians refused to take part in the rituals of Serapis, they were attacked by a mob and put to death. Feastday: March 17
