Bl. James Bertoni

As a child, Andrew Bertoni frequented the churches of his native city of Faenza, Italy. Upon becoming a Servite religious, he took the name James Philip. He eagerly read the lives of the saints, and acquired a deep knowledge of the liturgy. His dread of offending God prompted him to confess his sins daily. Following his ordination to the priesthood, Father James manifested a great devotion and reverence in celebrating Mass, contemplating the "mystery of the cross" as he beheld the consecrated Host before him. Father James served as procurator of the Servite priory of Faenza. On one occasion, he healed an ill monk by making the sign of the cross over him three times. On his deathbed, Father James continued his daily recitation of the Divine Office while holding a crucifix, which he frequently kissed. It was while praying thus that he died.
