Tikhvin Assumption Monastery of the Theotokos

The history of the Tikhvin monastery began in 1560, when, by the decree of Ivan IV and with the blessing of the Novgorod archbishop Pimen, the architect Fyodor Syrkov began the construction of a male monastery in Tikhvin, having under his command the working people gathered from twenty volosts.
The monastery received its name in honor and glory of the miraculous Tikhvin icon of the Most Holy Theotokos 'Odigitria', which was formerly in the Transfiguration Monastery in Staraya Russa, and then became the main shrine of the new monastery, where it was brought by the procession of the cross. It was revealed to one pious inhabitant of Tikhvin in a vision that the epidemic that was raging in the city would stop if the venerated image was delivered to the city - which was done. The pestilence soon stopped, and a monastery was erected in honor of the miraculous icon, returning a list of the revered icon to Staraya Russa.

At the beginning of the godless time, the Tikhvin monastery fell into the hands for ten years renovationists, but in 1930 it was closed - and its main shrine became an exhibit of the local history museum. During the German occupation, the miraculous image traveled a long way across Europe, and after the war ended up in the United States. Bishop John (Garklavs), who delivered it to Chikako, bequeathed to return the shrine to Tikhvin only after the complete revival of the monastery - which happened in 2004.
However, spiritual life in the Dormition Monastery began to revive, starting in 1945, when the Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God in the western tower of the monastery fence was transferred to the local Orthodox community. The entire monastery, the whole church, was returned only 50 years later - in 1995. Soon after, the main Cathedral of the Dormition was re-consecrated. Today in it, as in other monastery churches, the clergy of the monastery regularly hold services.
The Tikhvin Monastery is especially proud of the ensemble of bells installed on the belfry built in 1600. The oldest of them, called Early, weighing almost 120 pounds, was cast in 1549 and poured in 1802 with the addition of copper. Behind each of the other monastic bells - Big, Polyelein, All-day, Refectory, Lenten, Signal - there is also a history of its own, centuries-long.
