In front of the entrance to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, to the left of the main gate, there are three ancient marble columns of the Corinthian style. In the middle column there is a melted break from the Holy Fire. Here pilgrims leave notes. The crack, according to the Orthodox historical account, appeared miraculously on Holy Saturday, April 19, 1579. This story says that some of the clergy and monks of the Armenian Apostolic Church bribed the then head of the Jerusalem administration of the Ottoman Empire permission to be in the Temple of the Resurrection of Christ on that Great Saturday only of one denomination. On the eve of Easter, with the help of Ottoman guards, they locked themselves inside the Temple. At the appointed time on Great Saturday, the Patriarch of the Armenian Apostolic Church entered Kuvuklia and began to pray for the descent of the Holy Fire. In this situation, the Jerusalem Orthodox Patriarch Sophronius IV (from 1579 to 1608), who was not allowed inside by the Ottoman-Turkish guards, began to pray loudly with the people before entering the Temple. The expectation of the descent of the Holy Fire had already dragged on for a long time in comparison with ordinary time, when suddenly a thunderous blow, lightning, rang out from heaven. At one moment, a ray struck from the sky, as is usually the case when the Holy Fire descended, and it hit the middle column to the left of the entrance to the Temple. This column cracked (but did not split), and fiery bursts spurted out of it in all directions. They immediately lit a large candle at the standing next to Patriarch Sophronius IV, who conveyed the Holy Fire to the co-religionists. This was the only time in history when the descent of the Fire took place outside the Temple. It is in this unusual place that pilgrims often leave their personal requests.
