About object
In the western part of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, in the side-chapel of the Syrians-Jacobites, there is the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea, carved into a natural rock.
It was Joseph, a noble and wealthy elder, who turned to Pontius Pilate with a request to hand over the body of the executed Jesus. It was not difficult for him, since Joseph was a personal friend of Pontius Pilate and a member of the Sanhedrin who passed judgment on Christ. After receiving permission, he, together with another man named Nicodemus, took Christ from the cross and buried him in a tomb hewn in the rock. Joseph acquired this tomb for himself, but donated it for the burial of Christ. The shroud on which Christ was laid was also brought by Joseph. Joseph commanded to bury him next to the Holy Sepulcher, which was done.
