About object
Near Kolomna, on the opposite bank of the Moskva River, there is the old Bobrenev Monastery of the Nativity of God. The year of its foundation is unknown - as well as the exact origin of the name. According to one version, a repentant robber named Bobrenya founded the holy monastery. According to another, the founder of the monastery was the voivode Bobrok, who thus helped Prince Dimitry Donskoy fulfill his vow: in the event of a victory on the Kulikovo field, build a monastery of the Nativity of the Mother of God (it was on this day in 1380 that an epochal battle took place). The first written mention of the monastery dates back to 1578.
In the 17th-18th centuries, the Bobrenev Monastery functioned, the number of its brethren grew, and new ones were erected instead of dilapidated buildings. In the middle of the 18th century, a new one was built instead of the old Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin. But the second monastery church, the Entry into Jerusalem, has retained its ancient appearance of a tent-roofed church. Another church was built - in the name of St. Alexis, the man of God - as well as the Holy Gates, the main entrance to the monastery.
During the next 19th century, the monastery underwent a number of reconstructions, was expanded, acquired new buildings on courtyard and arable land. The monastic fraternity, among which there were doctors, provided free medical assistance to local residents. And in 1903, a parish school was opened at the holy monastery.
Until the very closure of the Bobrenev Monastery, prayers were heard within its walls for the soldiers who gave their lives for their friends on the Kulikovo field. In 1929, the monastery was closed, and warehouses for storing mineral fertilizers were arranged in its temples and cells. The monastery buildings were dilapidated and gradually fell into disrepair.
Only in 1991, the Bobrenev Monastery of the Nativity of God began to function again as a monastic monastery. Since that time, restoration work began on its territory. A great contribution to the revival of the monastery was made at the initial stage by the community of the metropolitan parish of the Church of All Saints on Falcon.
In 2012, the great consecration of the restored main monastery church in honor of the Nativity of the Virgin was performed. Soon a Sunday school began operating at the monastery, and the Society of Lovers of Church History was created.
Today, the brethren of the monastery carry out a wide social service. Those in need of food, clothing, medicines or other help receive it at the Bobrenevoi Monastery of the Nativity of God every day. Every year a monastery for children and their parents organizes Easter holidays and Christmas trees. Hieromonks from among the monastic inhabitants take care of the servicemen of several units of the Russian army. Every year the holy monastery is visited by many pilgrims from all over Russia and from beyond its borders.
