The Solovetsky Museum-Reserve opened the exhibition "Crimean War. Feats of Solovetsky monastery"

В Соловецком музее-заповеднике открылась выставка «Крымская война. Подвиги Соловецкой обители»

On August 16, 2024, the Solovetsky State Historical, Architectural and Natural Museum-Reserve hosted the opening of the exhibition «Crimean War. Feats of the Solovetsky monastery» dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the heroic defense of the monastery during the attack of the British.

In the summer of 1854, the British military steamers «Brisk» and «Miranda» armed with 60 guns, attacked the Solovetsky monastery. The monastery, which was much inferior in armament, withstood the siege, and its defenders became a model of fortitude and heroism.

«The actions of the monastery's brethren and laborers deserve special attention. We all know that such a stand, a firm response of two first-class frigates and their commanders to the ultimatum and threat — these are historical results. But if history is studied only by results, it is impossible to understand anything in it. In order to understand the course of a historical event, you need to immerse yourself in that environment and understand the fan of possibilities that was in front of the man» — noted at the opening of the exhibition director of the Solovetsky Museum-Reserve, vicar of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Solovetsky Stavropigial Monastery Bishop Porfiry of Ozersk.

The central place belongs to the list of the icon of the Mother of God «Sign», revered in the monastery as a special shrine, because the last cannonball fired from the British ships, hit such an icon and did not burst. The exhibition also includes a cartoon map of the time, on which the states are depicted in the form of animals.
