Feast of the Adoration of the Honorable Veil of the Apostle Peter

Праздник поклонения честным веригам Апостола Петра
On Monday, the 16th / 29th  January 2024, the Patriarchate celebrated the feast of the adoration of the honest chains of the Apostle Peter.

On this day the Church worships the chains of the Apostle Peter, i.e. commemorates the event of the release of the Apostle Peter by an angel from bonds and prison, which is narrated in the Book of the Acts of the Apostles (Acts. 12: 1-19): "Herod the king killed James, the brother of John, with the sword... (Acts 12:2) and seeing that the year is the year of the Jews, he put a yati and Peter..., though after the Passover to bring him to the people (Acts 12:3-4). But when Herod wanted to bring him out, in the night Peter was asleep... But the angel said to him, "Gird yourself and enter into your mold" (Acts 12:8). Peter followed the angel until he led him to the Iron Gate leading into the city, which automatically opened in front of them. Then Peter realized that the angel of the Lord had saved him from Herod's hand.

This miraculous event, described in the twelfth chapter of the Acts of the Apostles, was celebrated at the place of the Apostle Peter's imprisonment, where for centuries there was a holy monastery and pilgrimage site called St. Nicodemus, the Lord's secret disciple, or "Lentils," because it is believed that Nicodemus the Pharisee's conversation with the Lord took place there (Jn. 3) and because portions of lentils and other foodstuffs were distributed in times of famine. This monastery is located between the monastery of Pretoria and the monastery of Holy Godfathers Joachim and Anna.

Vespers was celebrated there the night before, and in the morning the Divine Liturgy was led by His Eminence Archbishop Theophanes of Gerasa, accompanied by Archimandrite Philumenos, Priest Nectarius and Hierodeacon Alexander.

During the Liturgy, His Beatitude and the Holy Sepulchral Fathers came to worship.

The Patriarchal and Hierarchal escort and the assembly were treated to a meal by the well cared for monastery Hegumen Archimandrite Macarius.
