Commemoration of St. Glykeria

Память Святой Гликерии
Christ is risen!

Today the Church celebrates the memory of the Martyr Glykeria and St. Sergius the Confessor, Father Photios the Great and Brother Patriarch Tarasius.

Glykeria was born in Trajanupolis, Western Thrace, in the 2nd century AD. When the ruler Savinus learned of her deed, he summoned her to him. After Glykeria drew the shape of the Cross on her forehead, the ruler became furious. He brought her to the temple of idols to pray and offer sacrifice to Zeus. The saint prayed, but the power of her prayer destroyed the idol of the god Zeus.

The agitated pagans stoned her in rage. But, miraculously, not a single stone touched her, causing many of those present to believe in the Risen Jesus Christ. They then tortured her to death.

The heroic women who endured suffering and martyrdom with incomparable courage then, as they do today, are inspired, no doubt, by the grace of the Holy Spirit and faith in the Risen Jesus Christ.

Christ is risen! The Lord is truly Risen!
