Commemoration of St. Basil, Bishop of Paradise, Confessor

Память святителя Василия, епископа Парийского, исповедника
Today our Church honors the memory of St. Basil, Bishop of Paria, the Confessor, St. Anfusius, the Holy Martyr Artemon the Elder, the Holy Martyrs David, John and Mina, Akakia of Kavsokalibit, St. George and St. Sergius, Patriarchs of Konski. Also celebrated today is the Dormition of St. Neophytos the Entarted.

Saint Basil was one of the most prominent proponents of the veneration of holy icons. This was facilitated by his theological and philosophical education, as well as by his exemplary virtuous life, which elevated him to the position of bishop of the city of Pario on the shores of the Propontida.

His whole position, however, resulted in his being persecuted and suffering many hardships. But wherever Basil was exiled, he remained steadfast in his faith. He claimed to see the triumph of Orthodoxy with the establishment of the term of faith by the Seventh Ecumenical Council. He then returned to his diocese, where he was received with great honors and there peacefully gave up his spirit to the Lord.
