Today our holy Church honors the memory of one of the Eight Apostles, Agabus, the incomparable Bishop of Hyrcania, Hermos, Bishop of Dalmatia, and the Burning Bishop of Marathon.
The Apostle Agabos, the Prophet, is known from the Acts of the Apostles. He prophesied the arrest of the Apostle Paul, who took his girdle and, binding his hands and feet with it, spoke the following prophetic words, "Thus says the Holy Spirit. The man to whom this girdle belongs will be bound by the Jews in Jerusalem just as I am now bound, and will be delivered into the hands of the Gentile Romans." He also prophesied a great famine in Jerusalem. Later, the Apostle Agabus preached the Gospel in various places and slept peacefully.
