March 1 is the anniversary of the death of His Eminence Metropolitan Makary. On this day in the Cathedral of Warsaw he celebrated the Liturgy and funeral service.

His Eminence Metropolitan Macarius was born in 1884 in Międzyrzeczek Podlaski. He graduated from the Helm Theological Seminary and the Kiev Theological Academy. From 1917 he was a professor of theology. He lectured at the Kiev Theological Academy and Kiev University, among others. He was an associate of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. In 1942, after the death of his wife, he tonsured himself into monasticism and received priestly chastity. He served as a priest in Kiev parishes. On April 20, 1945 he was ordained a bishop, becoming Bishop of Lviv and Tarnopol, and since 1948 Bishop of Mukachevo-Uzhgorod. In 1951 he was sent to work in the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church. On July 7, 1951 he was elected Metropolitan of Warsaw and All Poland. On December 8, 1959, he retired for health reasons. He died on March 1, 1961 in Odessa, where he was buried.
