Saints Anargyros Cosmas and Damian are honored by the Church today. As well as Saints Apollonia and Mauritius, and the martyr Constantine the Younger, who lived and taught the Gospel. Because of his devotion to the glory of God and the consolation of the faithful in the community of Ormidia, where he lived, a church was rebuilt in his name. His holy relic is kept there.
Doctors Cosmas and Damianos were famous and treated patients for free, hence the nickname Anargyri. They combined the knowledge of medicine with the true philosophy of the Church. They asked people to freely accept and profess faith in the Physician of souls and bodies, Jesus Christ, who strengthened their medical knowledge.
They took them to the emperor, who tried to persuade them to renounce the Nazarene. Not only did they not change their faith, but by persuasion and prayer they converted the emperor himself, who had previously accepted their medical care, with the result that both he and those present received the illumination of the Holy Spirit and professed faith to Christ.
Later they were envied by the teacher himself. He took them to some mountain under the pretext of gathering herbs for the preparation of medicines and there, attacking them with stones, killed them.
The rebuke of the holy doctors Anargyrius and the martyr Constantine before the glory of the Triune God is a blessing. We invoke the grace of the Saints, especially to the health workers, that they may gain courage in their valuable scientific work, offering his knowledge with love, respect, dedication and patience to every person who asks for it.
The churches of Agia Anargyro are celebrated in Agia Trimythia, Nicosia General Hospital, Paphos, Paleichori and the settlement of the same name in Larnaca, among others. It is also celebrated at the Chapel of St. Maurice in Pissouri, as well as the Church of St. Constantine in Ormidea.
