According to Vatican News, Pope Francis approved changes to the paragraph of the Catechesis of the Catholic Church concerning the use of the death penalty. In the new edition, its text looks like this: “For a long time, the use of the death penalty by the legal authorities after the trial was considered an adequate response to the seriousness of some crimes, as well as an acceptable, albeit extreme, means of protecting the common good. Nowadays, there is a growing awareness that, even after committing serious crimes, a person does not lose his dignity. In addition, a new understanding of the meaning of criminal punishment by the state has spread. Finally, more effective detention systems have been developed that guarantee adequate protection for citizens and at the same time do not deprive the offender of the full opportunity to atone for his guilt. ” Thus, the Roman Catholic Church strongly advocates the abolition of the practice of the death penalty on the planet, arguing that it is 'unacceptable because it infringes upon the integrity and dignity of man.' The new version of paragraph 2267 of the Catholic Catechesis was approved by Pope Francis on May 11 this year during his meeting with the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Doctrine Cardinal Luis Francisco Ladaria Ferrer - and on August 1, a document was signed on amending the text.
