The Vatican prepares to celebrate Christmas

В Ватикане готовятся к празднованию Рождества
Across Europe, preparations are continuing for the celebration of the Nativity of the Lord Jesus Christ, which, according to the established tradition, Western Christians will celebrate on December 25. In the Vatican, on the square in front of St. Peter's Basilica, a spruce tree nearly thirty meters high was installed with the help of a crane. Red spruce - this is the name of this huge tree, to be precise - this time it was brought from Slovakia. In the past and the year before last, the main square of the city-state was decorated with Christmas trees of Italian origin. Together with the fasteners, the current Christmas tree weighs seven tons, the diameter of the spruce trunk is 70 centimeters. The lights on the tree will be lit on December 11 and will remain on until January 10 next year.

Let us recall that the custom of planting a Christmas tree in the main square of the Vatican is relatively recent: it was introduced by Pope John Paul II in 1982. Since then, many countries and regions of Italy have competed annually for the right to give the Pontiff their Christmas tree.
Here, on the square, the construction of the Christmas crèche continues. On that since their construction is entrusted to the city of Teramo. The specialists who arrived from there are currently installing a concrete base with an area of 125 square meters and a frame made of steel pipes.

The figures for the Christmas crèche were made of life-size ceramics by the students and teachers of the Castelli High School of the Arts from 1965 to 1975. According to the concept developed by the Vatican, the composition should show the Savior of the world who came to console people - this approach takes on additional meaning in the modern realities of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Only part of the 54 figures made of Castellan ceramics, which have the status of a cultural heritage of the Abruzzo region, will be installed in St. Peter's Square. The entire collection could previously be seen in front of the church in the city of Kastelli, in Rome at the Trajan's Forum, as well as in Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Tel Aviv.
In what format the Christmas Mass will be held this time, it is not yet known exactly. Most likely, due to anti-epidemic measures, Pope Francis will celebrate the Holy Eucharist in St.Peter's Basilica with the participation of a small groups of believers making prayer during the festive service. This is roughly how the services of the Holy Week and Holy Easter were held this year - and millions of Catholic believers around the world followed them through television or radio broadcasts or online broadcasts on the Internet.
