St. Sophia Church became the first Orthodox house of prayer consecrated in the Polish capital over the past hundred years. Prior to its consecration, local parishioners gathered for services in a temporary wooden church.
The architect Andrzej Markovsky took as the basis for the new capital church on the left bank of the Vistula the St. Sophia Church in Constantinople - the grandiose salvage ship of the Byzantine era. At the same time, the five-domed Warsaw temple is significantly smaller than its prototype: the height of the building to the top of the central dome is 21.6 meters, the length and width are 36.9 and 30 meters, respectively.
St. Sophia Church in Warsaw was built entirely on donations from believers. At present, finishing work is underway inside it, which is planned to be completed next spring.
In addition to the new Church of St. Sophia, the Wisdom of God in Warsaw there are two more Orthodox churches - the Cathedral of St. Mary Magdalene and the Church of St. John Climacus. In total, up to forty thousand Orthodox believers live in the capital of Poland.
