There are 10 times more churches in the USA than in Russia

В США в 10 раз больше храмов, чем в России

The number of churches in the United States is about ten times the number of Orthodox churches in Russia, but the construction of new churches there is not progressing so fast, the Moscow Patriarchate said.

In the United States, there are about 400 thousand churches of all Christian denominations, and not only Orthodox, the Patriarchate said. Recall that in the United States there are 'several Orthodox jurisdictions' - different local Churches, including the Orthodox Church in America, which received autocephaly from the Russian Orthodox Church in 1970.

Over the past ten years, about 10 thousand churches have appeared in Russia. By the beginning of 2009, there were 29,263 parishes in the Russian Orthodox Church, and at the beginning of 2019 - 38,649 churches or other prayer rooms in which the Divine Liturgy is celebrated.

In 2015, on average, there were 6235 people per church in Russia, and in 2020 - 5540 people. At the same time, most of the churches are lacking in the Novosibirsk diocese (25 thousand people per church), the diocese of the city of Moscow (16 thousand people per temple), the Khabarovsk diocese (15 thousand people per temple), St. Petersburg and Annunciation dioceses (respectively, 14 thousand and 14.3 thousand people per temple).
